In Stock This Week...

Misogynoir. When Kamala was announced as the new Democratic nominee for president, we knew the misogynoir would be on 100. We're afraid that the Right is only getting started.

Looking to 2024

The Dem National Convention starts today. Who’s tuning in?

Some economic policies, though still not written, are starting to emerge from Camp Kamala. $6K tax credit for newborns, anyone?

VP Harris is also building a team around her and she’s named Ilan Goldberg as her campaign’s Jewish community liaison. Born in Israel, Goldberg is a peace negotiator that pro-Israel groups consider no friend of theirs. How does this pick influence her finicky stance on Israel…or does it?

Just as expected, the misogynoir is coming in loud and strong when it comes to Kamala Harris. Last week alone, we had Trump say “Camilla” looked “the most beautiful” he’d ever seen her on a recent magazine cover (because, duh, looks matter for women candidates), but still not more beautiful than him (because she is Black after all). Also last week, a GOP congresswoman that we’ve never heard of repeatedly and intentionally mispronounced her name on CNN, despite correction and context for why her behavior was anti-Black. It’s still only August, so buckle up, yall.

This election will come down to 7 swing states: AZ, GA, MI, NC, NV, PA, & WI. 14 maps demonstrate how both Kamala and Donnie can make it to the White House.

Keeping Up with Biden & Harris

Hey Joe. Are we really closer to a ceasefire than we’ve ever been? If so, why are we sending another $20B to Israel???

A new program that will give immigrant spouses and stepchildren of US citizens a path to citizenship launched today. Here’s how the Keeping Families Together program works.

The Biden Administration is increasing the pay of Head Start teachers to retain and attract educators to the program.

The site of 1908’s race riot in Springfield, IL is now a national monument. Though not often talked about today, the riot was so significant, it sparked the founding of the NAACP.

Congress, What’s Good

The heroes and zeroes on the Hill are still gone fishing. They’ll be back early September with the normal drama (like getting their lick back for Trump’s impeachments), committee meetings, and more.

Social Justice Round Up

We all remember Ajike Owens, right? Ajike was killed in front of her children by a neighbor who fired a fatal shot from inside her apartment. That neighbor was thankfully convicted on manslaughter charges this past Friday. The alleged 60-year-old killer (we say “alleged” because if she’s only 60, her white really did crack) faces up to 30 years in prison for Ajike’s murder.

Speaking of white people who are afraid inside their own homes, the man who shot teenager Ralph Yarl last April wanted the jurors in his trial to be sequestered. A sequestered jury would be isolated from the outside world to prevent influence from anything other than what’s submitted as evidence in court. That request was denied.

We’re just now learning about Ta’Kiya Young, a pregnant Black woman who was killed by a police officer in Ohio last year after he suspected her of shoplifting. That officer was indicted on murder charges last week.

What the Health

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has been declared a global health emergency again after an outbreak in Congo spread to other countries in East Africa. If you recall, the virus was last declared a global emergency in 2022 after an outbreak primarily among men who have sex with men in North America and in Europe. Vaccines helped curb the previous outbreak, but of course, none are available in Congo yet.

Health experts believe this could be the biggest summer wave of COVID that we’ve ever had and it’s still going.

A school in Texas has banned all-black outfits, because of their alleged association with criminality and with mental health issues, like depression. Completely ignoring the chance to fix the causes (mental health, “criminality”) while banning what they say is the effect (all-black clothing) makes no sense to us. Also, they’d probably have a fit walking in New York City where the standard person’s uniform is “all black everything.” Bless yo’ heart, Texas.

We got news for y’all (and us, too)….sunscreen is needed for the scalp

Around the Diaspora

Civil war is ongoing in Sudan, but peace talks are happening today in Egypt. At this point, the Sudanese people have been facing displacement and famine for over a year, so we are hoping and praying the military and RSF can come to a peaceful resolution.

The United Nations Security Council, the organization’s most powerful body, has never had permanent representation from an African country despite 70% of the council’s resolutions being related to Africa. The continent is united in its request for at least 2 permanent seats for balance and to help correct historical injustices.

Kartel fans rejoice. Vybz’s comeback performance is happening on December 31 in Jamaica. Best of luck to all trying to get tickets.

Our Black Jobs & Our Black Money

Heinz and its Black Kitchen Initiative is giving $20,000 to 5 Black-owned restaurants as part of an effort to fuel the places that feed our souls. To all of our budding restaurateurs out there, apply by 11:59pm on August 31 to qualify.

Moved anything lately? U-Haul is offering $100 as compensation for a recent data breach. We know, we know. $100 is disrespectful AF for exposing personal information and it feels like nothing in today’s economy, but it’s $100 that can go towards your next solo date at the movies.

Culture that Pops

TIME’s Kid of the Year is a 15-year-old from Virginia that created a soap that treats skin cancer

Colin Kaepernick could finally be returning to the NFL…as a coach.

A statue of the late, great John Lewis will be unveiled in Georgia this Saturday. Even better than the unveiling is the fact that Lewis’ statue will be replacing that of some Confederate man who deserved no recognition in the first place. If it feels misty on Saturday, we’ll know that’s the Daughters (& sons) of the Confederacy weeping.
