Put the People First Perhaps?

Whew. In a world where people are dealing with the chaos of hurricanes, genocides, and an upcoming election...why can't our politicians think of the people before themselves?

Applying for FEMA Aid

This hurricane season has been no joke and millions have been hit by Helene and Milton in some way over the last 3 weeks. If you or someone you know is impacted by the recent storms and need assistance to rebuild their homes, here’s how to get help.

Looking to 2024

The election is happening in 22 days. Are you familiar with what’s on your ballot?

Polls (if anyone is brave enough to believe them after 2016) indicate the race is in a dead heat.

Donnie says the “enemy from within” aka radical leftists aka anyone who isn’t a MAGA minion needs to be handled by the military.

Kamala Harris released her medical records and simultaneously put her rival on the ropes regarding his age and health. Who’s the “old” and “incoherent” candidate in the race now?

Obama pissed off some folks for his comments about Black men who aren’t feeling Kamala Harris. The former pres says the Black men that are anti-Kamala are being sexist and simply don’t want to be led by a woman. While this is true of some Black men, let’s not forget the fact that some Black men don’t love her stance on real issues like Israel; others are neither Democrats nor Republicans; and that we all have the right to question our candidates even if they may be the “lesser of two evils.”

Keeping Up with Biden & Harris

Joe & Co. finalized a rule last week that will require water utility companies nationwide to replace all lead pipes within the next 10 years.

Biden is not even in the race anymore and yet he still has words for Trump. Last week, 46 asked 45 to stop spreading disinformation about federal funding allocated to help victims of the recent hurricanes being used instead to support undocumented immigrants.

As Israel turned up the violence on Gaza, the White House sent 100 troops and an anti-missile defense system for support. They’re really doing an amazing job at ensuring peace in the region.

Congress, What’s Good

After the recent hurricanes, members of Congress on both sides have called for their recess to be cut short in order to discuss critical funding needs for disaster relief. Speaker Mike Johnson is holding firm to his belief that it can wait until after everyone is done campaigning for Election Day. This brand of aint-shitness feels uniquely American.

Social Justice Round Up

Amber Guyger, the former police officer sentenced to 10 years for killing unarmed Botham Jean in his apartment, recently asked to be released on parole. The judge gave her a swift no, which means she won't be able to try again until 2026. Hallelu.

Black Floridians facing Hurricane Milton last week experienced a lack of resources (money, transportation, time off work, etc.) to evacuate to safety. It is unfortunate, but a story we’ve heard many times before thanks to systemic racism and white supremacy.

Darryl George, the Texas student who’d been fighting with his school district over whether his locs are permissible in the classroom is still at it. Earlier this month, a federal judge ruled that he still does not have the right to return to school with the hairstyle without facing punishment. Although Texas does have a law around the CROWN Act, a separate state-level judge ruled that the district’s dress code policy is not in violation of that law. Considering both rulings, Darryl appears to be faced with continued suspension, another school option, or cutting his hair.

What the Health

Fall is upon us and our skin has different needs this season now than in the summer. Here are some skincare tips for those of us with mo’ melanin than a lil bit.

Yesterday was Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Here’s what Black women should know

Whooping cough cases are up over 340% from last year. Familiarize yourself with the symptoms so you know what to look out for.

Around the Diaspora

Last week, the Dominican Republic kicked off its deportation program in which it plans to expel up to 10K Haitians weekly. 11K Haitians were sent back over the border on the first go round, so it’s safe to say that they’re exceeding their own anti-Black expectations.

Protesters in Martinique are taking to the streets over the island’s high cost of living. Over the past week, demonstrators have set fire to a police station and shut the airport down, leaving visitors stranded.

Zimbabwe and Zambia have also recorded mpox cases. In total nearly 30K people have contracted the virus this year, mostly in Africa.

Our Black Jobs & Our Black Money

Searching for a new job can leave many burnt out. Here are 6 suggestions for beating the fatigue.

Culture that Pops

Today is Indigenous People’s Day. While a lot of us learned that “Indian” blood in our family was really just white, today is a great day to learn more about the ways that Black and Indigenous cultures have stood side by side in solidarity and in the pursuit of justice over the years.

2025’s MET Gala exhibition theme will draw inspiration from Black Dandyism—the style identity that Black men formed through the transition from enslavement to emancipation and even up to today. Black dandies of today like A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Pharrell, and Lewis Hamilton will help co-chair the exhibit. Will they get it right? (BTW, the dress code for next year’s event has not yet been announced, but it’ll be interesting to see if they stay in the same vein for that as well.)

Need inspo for this year’s Halloween costume? The Grio has suggestions for what they do and don’t want to see on the streets.
