We Couldn't Miss This

We unplugged for a mental health break, but how could we avoid chiming in on Donnie getting shot at?

Where Have We Been?

We needed an impromptu break for the sake of prioritizing family, rest and restoration because life has been turning up on us for the last several months.

We back, though…until our next vacation.

Looking to 2024

Whether you believe the incident at Trump’s rally over the weekend was an assassination attempt or just really bad theater, is there anything else dominating the news today? We cannot say enough how much the coverage is like nails on a chalkboard for us. This includes that cringe picture of Trump with his fist raised (see above), Biden pausing his commercials entirely (instead of pivoting his message), and the MAGA mob positioning Trump as an almost-martyr for their (un)worthy cause.

BTW, we also want to call out that the suspected shooter was a registered Republican. Now that the violence has interrupted their safe space, will Trump and all those 2nd Amendment warriors turn their “thoughts and prayers” into ideas and action?

With the growing sentiment that Biden is too senile to be running for president, is it really impossible to escort his ass off the ballot? Is there no other Democrat (Kamala or otherwise) to beat Donnie? Are we too afraid of Do we need to be thinking big?

Taraji P. Henson & social media have done wonders to inform the public of Project 2025. How many of us, however, realize that much of it has been in the works? Read through the details if you haven’t already. You’ll be surprised at how much conservatives are already working on.

BTW, the Republican National Convention starts today. Will you be following along?

SCOTUS Said

At the end of each term in June/July, the Supreme Court announces rulings that make us wonder whether we should start looking for someone to sponsor our move abroad. This year was no different. Here’s a quick recap of their 2024 rulings:

  • Trump, despite being an insurrectionist, is immune from any “official acts” he took to overturn the 2020 election

  • Federal prosecutors can’t charge January 6 rioters for “obstructing an official proceeding”

  • Courts no longer have to defer to federal agencies for clarity on statutes that are ambiguous

  • It is constitutional to punish homeless people that have no choice but to sleep outside

  • Bump stocks, attachments increase semiautomatic weapons’ rate of fire, can no longer be banned. This was one of the only gun control measures to actually become law after the Vegas mass shooting in 2017

  • Abortion pills can still be distributed by mail…for now

  • South Carolina can continue disenfranchising Black voters with gerrymandered maps

  • Public officials at the state and local levels cannot accept bribes, but they can accept gifts to reward their actions if the compensation is delivered after the fact

Please tell us that you see we’re already living through the start of Project 2025. The last several years of SCOTUS rulings have already shown us what the plan is.

Keeping Up with Biden & Harris

Operating for just 20 days, Biden’s little pop up pier in Gaza will be torn down. The Pentagon says any potential date for re-anchoring the pier has not been determined.

Amidst running for reelection and funding a genocide, it’s clear that Biden is MF tied. At last week’s NATO Summit, the man called his VP “Vice President Trump” and said the president of Ukraine was Vladimir Putin.

Joe claims both Israel & Hamas have agreed to a framework for releasing hostages and ending the war. We don’t believe him. He needs more people.

Congress, What’s Good

In Congress, the focus is on getting Biden out of the Oval Office and it appears to be a rare bipartisan issue. House Speaker Mike Johnson is appealing to Biden’s cabinet to leverage the 25th Amendment to and declare Biden is unfit to execute the duties of his office. Across the aisle, Democrats are asking Biden to stop his campaign on his own accord. But if “Hell no! I won’t go!” were a person…

Committee meetings are on pause, but we can expect them to kick back up next week.

Social Justice Round Up

Will John Jebrowski please stand up? That’s the white name a Black man successfully used to score an interview after his real name (Dwight Jackson) resulted in a rejection.

A new Louisiana law will require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in classrooms. Some pastors, parents, & activists think that’s a horrible idea.

A charter school in DC will give families $2,400 monthly in hopes that it will help reduce instances of poverty, truancy, and crime among its student population.

What the Health

Ladies, July is Fibroids Awareness Month and Black women in particular should be paying attention given the fact that they are more likely to be diagnosed. If you’re curious to know more about fibroids, their symptoms, and the variety of treatment options, check out resources like The Fibroid Foundation for more information.

We might need to prepare for the number of Black doctors to be even smaller in the future than it is now. Currently, our doctors only represent 5.7% of all doctors nationwide, but anti-DEI efforts are making it more difficult for medical schools to recruit Black doctors and other doctors of color.

Should we be paying more attention or nah? The US has paid Moderna $176M to develop a vaccine to treat the bird flu, despite officials claiming the public health risk being “low.”

Around the Diaspora

As famine looms and violence continues in Sudan, the warring factions are mulling over UN-mediated talks to discuss the possibility of a ceasefire

In Kenya, excessive consumption from government officials and a proposed tax increase have sparked criticism and violent protests by Gen Z.

Hurricane Beryl made its way through the Caribbean, devastating parts of Grenada and Jamaica in particular. If you’re looking for ways to give, check in with a brand called Révolutionnaire. They provide options to involve your local community in gathering toiletries and food and have a way for you to donate money online.

Our Black Jobs & Our Black Money

If you’re looking for a new role, but keep hearing so much about how many job postings on LinkedIn are fake, here’s a creative way to search for roles…

Hiring platforms like Greenhouse and Workday host job postings from tons of companies, but don’t allow jobseekers to directly browse roles posted across all companies. You can get around that by Googling your particular job function and the general domain each uses to post jobs. Don’t believe us? Check out this Greenhouse example and the same search for WorkDay. You can narrow it further by adding your city as well.

Culture that Pops

Zora Neale Hurston really is the gift that keeps giving. A new novel by the author is coming out in January 2025. This will be the 4th novel to be released since 2018.

Meet the two PKs that are making use of empty church facilities by offering under-utilized storefronts, kitchens, and workspaces to small businesses.

We all know the running joke about Black people living with the constant beeps of smoke detectors that need new batteries, but is it time to take fire safety in our homes seriously? The answer is yes.
